Horror films of the Silent Era
On December 10, 2017 by YelenaSome of the horror movies of The Silent Era are still shown in the cinemateques.
I was lucky enough to attend one of the screening in Brussels to watch one of the early masterpieces The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
This screening inspired me to look back at the history of the cinema and study some of the first experiments
which resonates today. The first horror movies were also the first phychological thrillers to be made.
The films featured stunning expressionist sets which influenced a contemporary visual masters. You can see the obvious influence of
Dr.Calligari’s whimsiacal style in Tim Burton films and in the animation of Laika Studio. The first masterpieces of 20s and 30s
laid the groundwork for the entire horror genre. Here are some stills from the best creepy films ever made. The plots are compelling from Phantom of the Opera and classics like Stephenson’s Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde , Bram Stalker’s Dracula ( Nosferatu ) and Jewish Mysticism of Golem.
I hope you will enjoy the eerie charm of sets and characters as much as I do.
